Nature's Healing Effects

Tranquility Garden planned for University Medical Center Brackenridge

A beautiful new Tranquility Garden is planned for a half-acre courtyard just outside the University Medical Center Brackenridge Intensive Care Unit (ICU). It will be a place of peace and restoration for patients, families and UMCB associates.

Being able to sit in a lush garden or walk a peaceful path instead of a hospital corridor or concrete sidewalk gives patients some measure of choice and self-determination.

City of Austin Loans Sculpture for Tranquility Garden

In support of the garden, the City of Austin has made an important piece of public art available to be used as a focal point in the garden. Prelude is a 15-foot tall bronze sculpture by international artist Itzik BenShalom, whose work is featured in corporate collections and museums in the United States and around the world. The sculpture reflects relationships and the interaction that humans have with one another.

Sacred Spaces and Nurturing Places

Design elements to support both the sacred spaces and nurturing places will include plant material buffers between areas; shade trees, ample seating for groups and individuals; and soothing, water features.
