Community Leaders Learn About the "Next Big Thing" at University Medical Center Brackenridge: Academic Medicine and Research

On March 25, the Seton Fund welcomed more than 450 people to the Four Seasons Hotel to learn about academic medicine and research--“The Next Big Thing”--at University Medical Center Brackenridge. The event netted more than $220,000 for research and programs at UMCB.

An affiliation formed last fall by the Seton Family of Hospitals, UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas and the University of Texas at Austin is setting the stage for a surge in research and medical education in Central Texas.

At the event, Seton honored Francisco Cigarroa, M.D., chancellor of the University of Texas System, for his efforts to establish the agreement between UT and Seton.

The audience included elected officials and business and civic leaders. Venture capitalist Kevin Lalande shared a vision for greatly increased commercialization of research. He made the case for improved public policy, delivery systems and technology improvements in health care.
